Even if you dive exclusively in tropical waters, you may want to purchase diving gloves. There are various different style and features of dive gloves available, such as the three finger or mitten style, plus gloves with grip or kevlar material. If you will be diving in temperatures below 21 degrees Celsuis, gloves are an essential piece of dive apparel. Here are the main reasons why;
1. For warmth, your hands do not have much natural insulation making them particularly susceptible to heat loss. In cold water, they may become numb and lose dexterity which is important if you are going to be operating other dive equipment and performing safety tasks. Particularly in water below 21°C as cold hands can often cause your whole body temperature to drop and which can become dangerous if it reaches the hypothermic stage. Dive gloves insulate your hands so you will not feel the effects of the cold water, or at least the extent of how cold it is.
2. To protect from cuts, scrapes and bruises both in and out the water. Especially in warmer water, even if you are only in the water for a short time, your hands soften making them more vulnerable to scrapes, cuts and stings. Obviously, you need to be careful when entering and manoeuvring around in the water but hazards are unavoidable and everywhere; rocks, protruding coral or sharp shells and debris to name a few. Dive gloves, although not impenetrable, will protect you against the majority of these dangers.
